Unit 1: Digital Documentation (Advanced)
Chapter 1: Introduction to Styles
1. What is a Style?
Exam Definition: A Style is a collection of formatting details (like font size, color, alignment, and borders) saved under a single name. Applying a style changes the look of selected text or pages instantly.
Key Advantages (Why use Styles?)
1. Consistency
Ensures all chapter titles, subheadings, and paragraphs look identical across the entire document.
2. Saves Time & Effort
Format huge documents with hundreds of pages in just a few clicks instead of manual line-by-line formatting.
3. Quick Updating
If you edit a style's design, every piece of text using that style updates automatically across the entire document.
4. Logical Structure
Makes documents neat, organised, and easy for screen readers to navigate.
2. Six Types of Styles in LibreOffice Writer
1. Page Style
Controls overall page layout like page size, margins, headers, footers, borders, and background colors.
Example: Setting a page to A4 Landscape mode with 1-inch margins.
2. Paragraph Style
Controls paragraph layout like text alignment, line spacing, tab stops, indents, and paragraph borders.
Example: Setting heading text to Center-aligned, Bold, 18pt font with 1.5 line spacing.
3. Character Style
Formats selected words or letters inside a paragraph without altering the rest of the paragraph.
Example: Highlighting single keywords in red bold text inside a regular paragraph.
4. Frame Style
Formats graphics, images, and text boxes including text wrapping options, outer borders, and margins.
Example: Adding a thin black border around diagram images and setting text to wrap around them.
5. List Style
Formats numbered lists and bullet points (e.g., bullet symbols, numbers, letter ordering, and indents).
Example: Setting multi-level bulleted or numbered points (1.1, 1.2) for study notes.
6. Table Style
Formats data tables including cell border designs, background row colors, and text alignment inside cells.
Example: Setting a dark header row with alternating light-grey rows for a timetable.
